Three ways we bring a die back into production

Most die manufacturers don't offer re-tooling, or price it to push you towards a new die. We specialise in it, and we're independent of every maker.

Resharpening

We restore the cutting edge geometry and bring blade height back into line, so the die cuts cleanly again at lower pressure.

For: dies that still run but are losing the cut

  • Clean, consistent cut restored
  • Less pressure, less anvil and liner wear
  • Minimal stock removed to preserve future regrinds

Regrinding

Precision grinding brings bearers and cutting edges back into a true, concentric relationship across the full face.

For: uneven wear, runout or height variation

  • Bearers and body reground true
  • Runout and uneven blade height corrected
  • Measured before and after

Repair

Chipped or rolled edges, bearer damage or worn journals. We assess what's recoverable and put it right rather than writing the die off.

For: damage after a jam, crash or drop

  • Chipped and damaged cutting edges
  • Bearer and journal damage
  • A straight answer if it isn't worth saving
Restore vs replace

Restore before you reorder

Sometimes a new die is the right answer. Often it isn't. Here's how the two routes compare for a worn or damaged die.

Signs your die needs attention

Worn dies rarely fail all at once. They drift, and the cost shows up as downtime, waste and damaged anvils long before the die is scrapped.

WORNRESTORED rounded tip sharp edge
Detail A: cutting edge profile, magnified

Rising pressure

You need more pressure to get a full cut, and anvils or liners are wearing faster.

Incomplete cuts

Tags, fuzzing or fibres on the cut edge, especially on nonwovens and films.

Waste not releasing

Slugs and matrix hanging on, causing stoppages and web breaks.

Uneven across the web

One side cuts, the other doesn't: a sign of uneven wear or runout.

Visible damage

Chips, dents or rolled edges after a jam, a foreign object or a dropped die.

Shorter runs

Repeat jobs need attention earlier than they used to.

FAQ

Common questions

Can't see your question? Get in touch and we'll answer it directly.

Do you work on dies from any manufacturer?

Yes. We're independent, so we sharpen, regrind and repair solid rotary dies regardless of who made them.

How many times can a rotary die be resharpened?

It depends on the die's design, material and how much wear or damage it has. We remove only as much material as needed, so a well-maintained die can usually be restored several times. We'll tell you what's left after each service.

How much does it cost compared with a new die?

Restoring a die typically costs a fraction of buying a new one. Every die is different, so we inspect and quote before starting any work.

What if the die can't be saved?

We'll tell you. If a die is beyond economic repair, we'd rather say so than charge you for work that won't pay back.

Do you take dies from outside the UK?

Yes. We work with customers across Europe and can advise on packing and courier arrangements.

What information do you need for a quote?

The die manufacturer, dimensions or drawing if you have them, the machine it runs on, the material being cut, and a description or photos of the problem.
